The Greg Rymer Program Endowment Fund was created to support children in underserved communities by ensuring access to free and low-cost after-school and summer programs offering tennis, pickleball, and educational classes. As I renew my commitment to raising funds for these program grants each year, I am struck by the increasing number of local families who are barely getting by or have fallen below the poverty line. The reality is that even a relatively minor setback, such as an unexpected high heating bill or an auto repair bill, can have a devastating impact on a family’s budget regardless of their income level.
Since the conception of the Greg Rymer Program Endowment Fund in 2021, each year we hold an Annual Memorial Pickleball Tournament and, with the help from sponsors, donors, raffles, and participants’ registration, we are able to distribute program grants when needed to our local chapter of National Junior Tennis and Learning.
Greg Rymer was the Assistant Teaching Tennis Professional and Founding Pickleball Professional at St. James. Greg spent his life coaching, mentoring, and developing skills for racquet sport athletes at all levels. He had a particular interest in helping youth development through sports. When Greg passed away, I was hoping to continue his work by setting up an Endowment Fund which will allow an impact on local youth for many years to come.
“These grants will bring tennis to kids who might never have played, encouraging them to adopt healthier lifestyles, motivating them to do well in school, and setting them up for success in life,” said USTA Southern Director, Diversity, NJTL & Grants, Cee Jai Jones.
